Please tell me if and when I can get a new ''simple'' phone. They were the best thing since sliced bread. My fingers are big and my eyesight poor, I do not want symbols, gobbledygook or contracts just plain english and pay-as-you-talk.

Peter - Vodafone is still supposed to sell them in three countries (incl. Germany and Spain if I recall correctly from a presentation in May 2007). You can consider the Simply range a promising experiment, but one that failed in its execution of retailing strategy..

<!--%kramer-ref-pre%-->[...] I think we all are happy that Apple entered this marked- whatever they design (and will be designing over the next years)- it will help the marked to develop further and drive usability. BUT: we all should not forget that there were iconic mobile products before Apple… One of the most simple and reduced handsets (which the i-phone isn’t btw) was the SIMPLY range developed by Vodafone’s usability department together with Sagem. Unfortunately these products aren’t available in the U.S. (yet?) but they are in Europe and are extremely successful and easy to use. For all those who just want a mobile phone, here it is: http://visionmobile.com/blog/?p=27 [...]<!--%kramer-ref-post%-->

a little bit og a fault in there:
the interface and Information-architecture was mainly developed by Vodafone's inhouse User Experience team, not by any of the aboved named agencies.

And yes...that handset is a killer (and it¥s weel sold)

[...] The killer handset What if operators could be making their own handsets ? Surely they would deliver the best handset for their own consumer segments, they thought. Vodafone decided to walk down this path and assembled a fine team to produce the Simply range. Vodafone?s Simply proposition, comprising of handsets, customer service and dedicated calling plan, was designed for a consumer segment the operator calls ?adult personal users?. However, according to reliable sources, Vodafone country operations are today struggling to sell Simply handsets, because the range is competing unfavourably with other handsets in terms of price. Here’s another lesson: operators don’t know how to sell handset propositions, but manufacturers do. So much for the killer handset notion. [...]

<!--%kramer-pre%-->post is from a pair of articles which seem to pull in slightly different directions: firstly the assumption that one day people will be reduced to a brand vector, that is a list of brands which define what they like, and secondly the direction of the Vodafone Simply range. I've been a fan of the Vodafone Simply concept for a while, and the post points out a few interesting facts - mainly that Sagem may be the nominal manufacturer but they have very little to do with what makes the handset tick, ie. the UI<!--%kramer-post%-->
