Andreas,

regarding your remark about handheld TV's, I would like to argue that a handheld TV is a TV in contrast with a mobile phone that is a multipurpose devise (with the strongest asset of completing phone calls). Also, Mobile TV will not substitude the tradinional TV bussines, due to the fact of screen limitations. Mobile TV is a mobile Value Added Service and for that reason you need tailormade content. The rise of the service will take some time since the users learning curve is influenced by the technology factor (3G).
Regarding your question about the use of the UGC, I believe that the aim is the creation of communities and the videos will be a starting point.

Kyro,

I agree that user-generated content is creating a big buzz in the industry, and rightly so. I would argue that even with content re-shooting/re-scripting/re-editing, most users will not have time or interest in mini-sized TV (e.g. I have not seen many people carrying watch-sized TVs for example, even through these have existed for years).

There are strong signs for this: Analyst Iain Gillot, writing in RCRnews cites research that shows that take-up is as low as 1 per cent in the United States and 3 per cent in Europe (as I also mentioned on my InfoCom article).

However, with UGC content on the rise, what better use of mobile phones & 3G, than to take video clips from the handset to the living room ?

User Generated Content I believe that it will be the next hype. But commmenting to the topic, I believe that the transformation of TV content into mobile TV content is achievable. In this case you either re-shoot with the use of close ups (and generally preferred one camera)or you produce a totaly different script by taking into consideration the mobile habbits (short length etc). Another option is to edit certain clips from succesfull series and just broadcasted into mobiles.

<!--%kramer-ref-pre%-->[...] Andreas Constantinou has some commentary up on what is needed for mobile video to succeed—basically, people need to be able to create and share their own videos with their handsets easily...the user-generated content paradigm. In the bottom half of the post he has listed what is needed, and it’s a good list: Good software, appropriate distribution, 3G, flat-rate data plans, brands and communities and so on...worth a read. Skip the first part of the article—Constantinou has tried to coin a new term (reverse mobile TV) which fails on a number of levels, the most significant one being that it’s talking about video rather than TV. He then goes on to say it will “do for mobile phones what the Slingbox is doing for TV”, which is another thing entirely. [...]<!--%kramer-ref-post%-->

The problem is that mobile TV is beset by context-of-use issues. Thereís an intriguing article about it here:

<!--%kramer-pre%--> I've always wanted to say that: "Mobile Inversion." Please make it a meme and put it on Wikipedia with my name attached to it. So what is it? Ask Andreas Constantinou, who says mobile TV is a great idea. Only the content should go in the opposite direction. I agree, Andreas: it's brilliant. Abhishta Paranjpe performs a similar flip flop, telling us everything we need to know about how to get Apache web servers running on our S60 phones. This is a geek undertaking, but it hints at some really interesting<!--%kramer-post%-->
