Hi Paritosh,

I believe that Apple has striken exclusive deals with 4 operators instead of using a promiscuous distribution model, for some very good reasons:
1. Apple gets a decent revenue share of user monthly fees. By different analyst estimates, Apple gets about $12-$18 per user per month, a very very high figure. Without the exclusivity, Apple wouldn't be able to get into a rev share deal. (compare these figures with the data ARPU figures - typically around $1-$7 depending on the region and operator)
2. Apple increases demand by creating scarcity. The harder something is to get, the more you want it.
3. Apple is better able to control pricing of the iPhone; i.e. that it is sold at a fixed price per geography and it is not subsidised.

Hi Andreas ,

Any thoughts on why despite all these pluses that the phone has iphone has chosen to tie up only with one mobile operator in each geography ? All the other phone manufacturers have chosen to use multiple networks in their versions of the smart phone ?

With such a good device would it not have made sense for them to capture scale with other vendors ?

Is this because apple could not get the required subsidy from other operators that it needed to make the iphone competitive with the other high end phones ?
Or is it because they were not sure if the other vendors would invest along with them in making the phone compatible with visual voice mail and other features that they probably have in mind and thus probably lead to a compromise in the iphone experience ?
Or is this because they feel that making their phones open to all networks will in some way compromise their control over the platform ?
I am just not able to get a clear answer to this .. and would be thankful for ur input .

thanks

Excellent post Andreas. I'm wondering if you could also through some light in the operator lock process of the iphone. Platforms available, as well as how operators in Europe might use the Synchronoss platform to activate the iPhone once their customers start using it.
