A good chunk of our work is done with folks new-to-mobile. I can't tell you how many times I've been the RAG above (odd as I'm in user experience, typically part of marketing). The in-house RAGs look at me with relief ("finally an outsider telling CHoM some sense!"). I can readily tell the less-than genius architects. They are the ones looking at me in disbelief, and don't believe me until two days later.

Great post... to overcome the Java issues we went at Mobile slightly differently. We built a simply browser plugin that can talk to the operating system API's and then make that data available to any web server by adding it to the outgoing HTTP request. Then a server side module intercepts the data and passes it via CGI to any web service script that needs it. We have versions for both WM and Blackberry (Java).

This overcomes a lot of the issues you mention above. To make life easier for the consumer we've also integrated the browser plugin to support something called contextual menus. The idea is simple - mimic the richness of a standalone app but do it inside the browser. That way the consumer already knows how to use it. The menus change dynamically based on the context of the user, the device and it's current location.

Essentially this allows you to integrate any of your current web services to any mobile device. For the developers out there who want to add their own context we've enable our plugin with it's own set of open api's - you can find them here: <a href="http://www.5o9.net/MobileMe/Documentation/ClientAPI/" rel="nofollow">http://www.5o9.net/MobileMe/Documentation/ClientA...</a>

Cheers,

Amazing post. I believe that any person trying to understand the challenges we face to build a mobile business should read it. I would like more people to know about it and have a read. So, I wonder if you don't mind if I translate excerpts of your post in portuguese in order to reference people to it.
