The G series uses PLAIN UIQ3, with a new shell and some optimization...please read and hear what the AAS guys though about them...and other people too

You find the UIQ experience techy...well...i don't...i find the s60 experience techy and horrible...but that's me

Anyway, i really am becoming more convinced that there's a only a slim chance about you really saying anyting right about UIQ in your upcoming article, because i only see ignorance about the subject

Jon,

I work as a mobile interaction designer and believe that it would have been a disaster for Sony Ericsson to push UIQ onto the K750 etc. feature phones.

I don't know about the latest version of UIQ but up til now the user experience has been too techy and - in my opinion - outright horrible. Even people I know at Sony Ericsson admit that it has been a failure.

Perhaps UIQ is on the right track now, but I doubt it until I have seen the new version.

Olivier,

True, today there is 10s of companies who have created ECMAscript-esque implementations for mobile devices to recreate the iPhone idle screen experience (and you 've obviously done your research).

However, I see that widgets will evolve from 'wired' to 'tired', to 'expired' in a very short space of time. (to borrow the terminology used in Wired magazine). Widgets will not only become commodity but the word itself should become detrimental to their sales pitch in the next 12 months (i.e. 'oh, so you are a widget company. so what's new ?').

As a result, vendors will move to the next step, which is connected core applications, or widgets in an app. This is what you get by taking applications like calendar, contacts, email, idle screen, album viewer or music player and adding some visual wrapper around an rss feed or other internet-borne data.

As such, my prediction is that there will be 30+ companies doing widgets-in-an-app type of software solution in 12 months. However, they will not necessarily be using the word widget, but something like 'connected addressbook', 'social calendar', 'live music player', etc. Widgets, or single-function visual manifestations of online data will be the easiest way to develop and deploy such connected applications.

Unstable??? Well, that¬¥s better and very reasonable…i do agree UIQ is in a key point of its existence.

Remember…what had happened if SE started pushing UIQ onto feature phones like k750-k800-k850 before??? Volume sales…and it seems they are finally doing it…besides the g series, there is a UIQ cibershot with optical zoom to be announced

But yes…this year should show if we can count wiht UIQ for the future…Motorola situation is also something to watch on this

wasn't prediction 2 already met in 2007 ? we have plusmo widgets, nokia widgets, nokia widsets, webwag, mojax, yahoo go blueprint widgets, getmobio, access netfront widgets, opera widgets, zumobi, ulocate, bling, openwave midas widgets, pleyo widgets, iphone widgets (sortof).. guessing all the other suspects will have one too, google, microsoft.. so that's at least 20. 30 is not a big stretch. too fragmented or opportunity for someone to create the "write once run anywhere" ala netvibes UWA ?

Jon,

The demise of UIQ may come on 3-4 years, which is why I changed the phrasing from 'demise' into 'unstable future', which we should observe in 12 months or so (the temporal context of this post).

But wait until the next post when I have a chance to expand my argument before refuting it :)

the demise of UIQ??? can¬¥t wait for that one…let me guess…you think the X1 is a sign of that???

ROTFL

just some hints:

The g series – UIQ goes mainstream

The Xperia series is not wm only (get it??? also see the next one…its related)

P5/Paris (new hardware platform, new UIQ iteration)

ALOT more devices on row to be announced (seriously…do you actually know what SE is doing inside??)

I am not counting with motorola…if they put their act together…well, some more “demise” for you

Finally…you talk alot of widgets…and not mention a single time the upcoming Opera Mobile 9.5 (must be because the main platforms are UIQ and WM)

<!--%kramer-pre%-->s interview features quite a few interesting historical facts recounted by Jari from his experience in building up the largest event organising circuit in the industry. On the subject of the MWC, I wrote a detailed post onLearnings from the Mobile World Congress and 10 predictions for MWC 2009. Recommended reading if you're trying to figure out what are the main trends emerging from MWC, particularly if you're interested in service delivery, Ovi vs Trolltech, open source or OHA/Google.<!--%kramer-post%-->
