Jason - interesting to hear this confirmed from yet another source. In Trolltech's filings it appears that Motorola licensed an additional 200 developer seats from Trolltech in mid 2006, so it might be that the strategy towards Qt/E was effected sometime in between, probably with the change in management in mid 2007.

I also heard news about Motorola's move away from Qt but at the Motodev Summit in London. The Motorola Linux architect said that the next gen of Motomagx Linux devices would definitely use a different UI layer.

Morten,

Very interesting - I didn't know Motorola had made public their move away from Qt/E. Re: MIDP3, I also think you can build all core apps on top of MIDP3, but I don't know how 'customised' and vertically integrated the MIDP3 stack has to be in order to deeply bind into the OS (as with Android, SavaJe). Re: GTK vs Qtopia, I used to also see this as black & white. But Trolltech has demoed integration of GTK within the Qtopia stack and I think that there is still value in Qtopia for Nokia, primarily as an application execution environment and secondly as a lighter-than-GTK, proprietary (who cares?) UI framework and AEE on top of S40.

Stefan,

I see Qt as much more than a runtime. It's an application execution environment (rich runtime) + an application framework (i.e. app lifecycle management, event management, etc) and graphics toolkit. I think .Net and Flash Lite lack the application framework capabilities, and I expect AIR (when and if it is brought to mobile) to also have some rudimentary app framework capabilities.

Would you equate Qt as a runtime similar to Microsoft's .Net/Silverlight and Adobe's Air/Flash/Flex?

Very insightful post as always.

A note on Motorola: Motorola was moving away from Qt/E prior to the Nokia acquisition. According to Paul Leeper, Director Ecosystem and Market Development, future Linux based phones would not use Qt(Qtopia). This was said at the UIQ Fasttrack conference in Budapest last November. Further, Motorola would focus on a Linux+Java environment because "thats what the carriers want". They are very much looking forward to MIDP 3.0 (Motorola is heading the Java Community Process). To me it looks like you could pretty much build an entire phone application suite with MIDP 3.0.

With Motorola dropping Qt/E and "everybody else" going for GTK, it looks like Qtopia is pretty much hung out to flap in the wind. Seems like Nokia is a comfortable exit for Trolltech.

<!--%kramer-pre%-->Prediction 1: A new would-be Trolltech will surface as an on-device service delivery platform Analysis: Nokia acquired Trolltech for its Qt application execution platform, and specifically for two reasons (see ourdetailed analysisof the acquisition): a) to use Qt as a service substrate, an on-device platform which wraps each one of 10s of forthcoming Ovi services across the 10s or 100s of connected device models across PCs, home<!--%kramer-post%-->
