Update: look at this one http://tmenguy.free.fr/TechBlog/?p=361 Java to AS3 translation ... meaning running java on the flash runtime ... again a proof that language and runtimes are more and more uncorrelated!

Thanks, missed this one. Yes strange, but mobile packager seems to be more of a product description than a name.

I agree with you Dan. I just searched "Mobile Packager" on google and I was able to see another product that does similar thing. I guess Adobe is becoming like MS

It is really sad to see adobe take a product name that is already used by another vendor!!

Adobe product name are very unique and but not this one. Adobe just stole a product name from another vendor that I know of.!!

Ciao Simone,

Thanks for the comments.
Yes, agreed, for me Qt is an exception: it is a "direct", kind of old school native development environment, like the iPhone one, but unlike it Qt is really cross platform at the heart...anyway we never know, project like adobe alchemy will allow C++ to run in a flash runtime, so perhaps C++/Qt may also become a kind of "cross runtime" platform :-) .
On the Widget side yes, those frameworks can count in the list, companies like ViaMobility are already providing some kind of "multi widgets framework runtime", on which yahoo, google and other will run.
2009 will be VERY interesting!

Anyway I didn't know your blog ... right into my feed list!

BR and Happy New Year

Ciao Thomas,
great recap, maybe lacks of some thoughts about QT and widgets at least.

I've recently attended a panel talk during SmartphoneShow@london where they discussed the future of dev. runtimes and the panel agreed that we'll probably not have a “one language fits all” paradigm.

We'll probably go towards thiner and thiner web clients and, that's why I think that RIA and Widgets are key areas.

Hi Mark Thanks for the comment!

What I think is really interesting with this Adobe Packager is that the end user thinks he has downloaded/is using a normal native application ...and didn't see an awkward ".swf" file.
As for the automatic installation of AppZone, I'm just not sure : installing something the user hasn't requested...has to be cleanly explained and described at install I think.

As a side comment about the Adobe reorg: It seems that the "flash platform" is strengthened, but is there any future for the flash lite runtime itself? Or do you see it developed and expanded to reach the real flash?

Regards

Great article Thomas!

The Adobe Mobile Packager not only allows you to package applications for distribution, but it also enables the distribution and update of Flash itself.

For the first time on mobile devices its possible to get Flash over-the-air as required.

Included with the OTA player is the Adobe AppZone for discovering applications in catalogues from our partners Zed and Thumbplay.
