@Tsahi: well, the number of Android devices on market is so low that it's not relevant to compare the two environments yet. But in general, I don't expect Android to be worse than S60 in this respect.
As to non-mobile devices, there are no commercial "gadgets" available to everyone for purchase so there really is nothing to compare. However, I can't see any reason for applications written for these devices not to be available on Android Market. At least I'm not aware of any signs regarding this.

Gabor,

Thanks for the great post - I share your views on this matter. I do have two questions though:

1. Fragmentation will definitely make the lives of Android developers hard, but will it be harder than trying to run on an S60 and port between handsets from different vendors?

2. What about non-mobile devices using Android? How do they map into this tangle? Will you be able to use the AppStore for their apps? What will be the restrictions on these devices for developers? How will developers will regard them at all?

Thanks,
Tsahi

One correction - I'm seeing tethering apps on the market in T-Mobile UK. Not strictly against their T+Cs but you're supposed to pay an extra to get it and I don't.
