Great article! This is indeed a very detailed illustration of all the various location-based apps available. While each app suits different needs of every individual, I personally think apps like AudioBoo or Flook sounds pretty cool. It’s like a localized Tripadvisor that allows you to share your views and comments on places. I would definitely want to know what my friends have to say about a particular restaurant or nightspot before checking it out.

Hi Chris,

You make an interesting point. Since as you say, these services will not be limited to smartphones, then the main opportunity would seem to be in the mobile web. What then matters is whether the OS / device manufacturer code make the location available to the browser. (This is the case with Mobile Safari, for example.)

Hi Jane,
Great article and fantastic summary of the space.
I do want to highlight that you made no mention of network based location services which will be the next big differentiator moving forward. As Mobile Operators expose LBS API's and the location aggregator space opens up, Location services will explode in a similar manner to how SMS did when inter-carrier messaging was introduced.

This will be a huge opportunity to location services but only if not ignored.
I'm curious to know your perspective on the use of network based resources to enhance the services that you offer as Network based services work with ANY device and are not limited to Smartphones.

Thanks Shai, but I was just illustrating with my choice of companies, rather than trying to be complete. I'd have needed a much bigger diagram to include everyone!

Hi David,

I'm not sure what you mean about backwards integration?

As for the GPS needing WiFi, it doesn't, not on the iPhone anyway. The iPhone has what's known as "assisted GPS" - it uses both WiFi and cellular data networks to get an initial idea of where it is, which then enables it to predict the positions of the satellites in the sky and find them more quickly. You can get a GPS fix on your iPhone with all radios except GPS switched off - it's just that it will take quite a long time the first time you do it in a new location.

Great article Jane,

Segmentation was excellently done!

I wonder about backwards integration. For example, smarter cameras (and I mean real cameras such as Nikon with lenses) and other products.

I would also like to see that the ability to find location with GPS not require WiFi nor the phone connection. (Like when I'm in the woods with a real GPS device and there is no phone coverage. Or for iPod Touches etc that aren't connected to WiFi.)

Yes, flook (note the spelling) is available worldwide. We do suggest that you get a better experience in London or San Francisco, but it only takes a couple of what we call our "superflookers" for a city to start feeling interesting. I think we've had a few cards made in Berlin, and you'll also see "transformed" content from one of our partners, nextstop (www.nextstop.com).

Yes, just adding some carefully chosen coupons to flook's mix of interesting local secrets near you. The thought is that if a high-end restaurant has a really good deal, then that *is* interesting enough for flook. We wouldn't show a two for one deal at McDonalds though :-)

I totally agree with you about Foursquare. We have to believe that all these check-in applications are beavering away to add more depth to their experience - otherwise it does wear thin quite quickly.
