In 2012, the global app economy accounted for 18% of the combined app services & handset market. We estimate that by 2016 the contribution of the app economy will rise to 33% of the combined market, equivalent to half of the handset market.

  • In 2012 the app economy was worth $53Bn and is expected to expand at a 28% CAGR up to 2016, reaching $143Bn.
  • North America produced most of the app economy output in 2012 and also led in app product and services consumption with 40% of the global output. LatAm is the fastest growing app economy, growing at 52% CAGR between now and 2016.
  • iOS remains the most valuable platform in the global app economy, reaching $27Bn in 2013. However, Android is growing twice as fast in value and will outgrow iOS by the end of 2016.
  • Outsourced app development is by far the most profitable route to market for developers today. App store sales and in-app advertising accounted for just 27% of the total app economy in 2012.
  • Mobile developers account for 12.6% of the global developer population in 2013. In 2016 there will be just under 5 million developers globally.
  • With over 750 thousand mobile developers active in APAC in 2013, the region leads in terms of total number of developers but the largest population of iOS developers is in North America, followed by Europe.
